Portrait piece
My piece depicts a close up of a woman, she looks like she may be modeling for something. The most obvious element is value. The most obvious principle is contrast.
To create this piece I first made grid-lines, started to map out my portrait and then i started to find places with dark and light value to see where i needed to put them at.
My inspiration for this piece were the eyes from the reference, they caught my attention. The emotion i tried to convey was the meaning in the eyes.
My goal as an artist was to really show the true meaning behind this piece. I have not yet reached my goal because I've not put all the values in my piece that show the true meaning.
By creating this piece i learned that everything has more than one word to be said. Overall i like this piece because it shows different values and its very authentic. I will use what i learned on this piece for future works because it is helpful.
Flowers Piece
This piece isn't something that was copied, it was a thought and i turned it into reality. It is simply a picture of 3 flowers, and on each flower the petals are a different color, but each individual flower has its own color scheme. You can see a good contrast from the background to the colors of the flowers.
I created my piece using oil pastels. I blended in some of the colors in the flowers so they looked more realistic. Having a dark background but colorful flowers was appealing to me because it contrasts what I'm trying to get the "audience" to look at and see.
In creating this piece, i tried to show how you can see the importance within the flowers vs. the background color. I tried to change it up a little and make it different by having multiple colors and a dark background. My piece is to make whoever is looking at it, feel whatever emotion that comes to heart and mind.
I think my main goal was to show different variations of feelings and emotions within looking at one piece. Letting it make you feel whatever you think when you see it. Having a heavy dark color, and then colorful, bright, gradient colors to conflict their first thought. Making it a whimsical piece of artwork.
I'd have to say that overall, i didn't really reach my goal of how it was in my mind. I didn't finish, for one, and for two, i could have blended more and smoothed out the background to make it look better, and not have so many bumps or for it not to be uneven.
Pen and Ink Piece
This piece is a dream catcher which is used to "catch bad dreams". I wanted to draw this piece because it represents more to me than what everyone would usually see it as - a dream catcher. I drew the basic part of one, and then just added what i thought would be best for my project.
I created this piece by first looking up some references i could use, and then i just used what came into my head. I started by mapping it out with my pencil, adjusting whatever i thought needed to be adjusted. Then i went in and outlined what i needed to with a sharpie, and finished by coloring in certain parts and using thick to thin lines in my feathers.
I thought about doing this because it seemed like something meaningful to me. It represents a chill vibe and it just feels relaxing to look at. To me, the focal point is in the middle, and it just makes your eyes move from the middle, around to the top.
My goal for this was to get the audience to feel relaxed and calm looking at my piece. Having the different textures in my piece helped make it more realistic and calming, i thought. I had more of a realistic goal for my piece, and it is how i imagined it to look, better even. Shawn Coss inspired me to do my piece and make it more realistic.
Overall, i like my piece. I think i did better than i intended to. Having the different textures really helped my piece in the end. With all of the thick and thin lines, colored in and blank portions, i think it all fits in well and that it is all placed nicely around my work.
Watercolor Piece
My piece was a picture i took myself when i was at the Great Smokey Mtns. in Tennessee. It is a picture of a walkway between trees with a wooden type of fence showing mountains in the distance. I used colors such as blue, green, grey, and brown all to show the different values in my painting.
I created this using water color. I tried to give my piece a point of view, showing the fence and walkway, then the mountains closer to the camera, and then the mountains in the far distance. I blended colors so i could find the color i wanted to use.
I chose this picture because it was something that i took, and i thought it looked fascinating so i thought i should choose it to paint. I tried to paint what i saw that day and what was on the picture.
I tried to create a realistic piece, as much as i possibly could. I had to use a variety of different brush types in this piece. using small and thin brushes for the hard to reach areas, and large bold brushes for the background so it could be filled in like it is on the picture.
This piece didn't come out how i had hoped, i missed some days so it wasn't how i wanted it to turn out. Mostly, it is good enough and shows the message i wanted to present. Giving Tennessee all the credit, of course for it's beautiful mountains. I wouldn't say I'm "happy" about my end result, but i guess i could say that i am satisfied.
Coil Pot Piece
My piece was created using clay. I was trying to go for more of a "pot" looking piece. I don't have a name for my piece, but i worked hard on it. I created spirals, roses, and really interesting designs on my piece.
My piece was made from clay, and i used a variety of tools to finish my artwork. I used my hands to smooth out and make coils. I used tools such as a bottle cap and roller to make the roses on my piece.
I just thought of this on my own. My piece is simply a coil pot. i tried to give off a different type of feeling when looked at by anybody.
My goals for this piece were to create a simple looking piece of art that would be distinguished from others. It isn't how i imagined it to be but it's good enough and it looks good.
I learned how to blend coils in together so it would make my piece look better. I made mistakes and i learned from those mistakes during this process.
Foreshortened piece
My piece is of a baby pig walking onto bricks. I used prismas to color my piece and make it stand out. The title is "Piggy Walk". Some elements visible in my piece are lines, color, and texture.
In creating my piece, i put thought into how i would show his body smaller than his head. I attempted to make it look as if he was walking onto bricks. Media i used are prismas which are basically colored pencils, but if used correctly it may look like oil pastels.
I searched for examples of foreshortening and struggled to find something, til i came across a picture of a pig. I had to adjust it to make sure it wasn't the same, either way, it was a picture and my piece is a drawing. My pig looks happy and it is just supposed to give off a happy emotion. Emotions associated with happiness, joy, etc.
My goals are to grow in drawing as much as i can, progressing toward perfection. Although i know it wont be perfect, I'll try my best to make it perfect. This piece is just a project along the way to success.
I learned that with using prismas, if you lightly color and you're trying to blend, it'll work better and look better. Having really blended colors is a good thing if you want to use baby oil to make it shiny. My piece didn't turn out exactly like i wanted it to because i should've blended better and then used the oil.
Art show piece
My piece was supposed to be how nature would look from a different perspective. It shows a could different flowers and insects that would be seen. The title of my piece is "Bugs Perspective". I tried to be unique with this piece because i had put a lot of thought into it.
To create my piece, i first used pencil to put everything where it was supposed to go. After i did that, i then used prismas to add color to my piece so it wouldn't look bad. I wanted to use bright colors that made it pop out and made everything look better and brighter.
The message i tried to get across was that all things are beautiful but it just depends on your perspective. I could've done this piece from the sky-view, but i wanted to do something that i thought was special. Drawing this piece, i enjoyed how everything looked from the perspective. Me being into photography, I used a picture i took of a flower, and added that flower into the drawing.
My goal was to show that if you look at things from a different perspective, you can see things for how they are in other ways - in this case, how an insect would see nature. I tried to do something different that i had never done before. I feel like it came out good and sort of how i pictured it, but it just goes to show that not everything is how you see it.
I feel like when i added color, it didn't come out how i imagined. Looking at it with just the pencil looked better, but both ways are good. I wish i would have done the sky differently, but not everything is perfect. Nature is beautiful in all perspectives, it just depends on how you see it for yourself.
